The Great Barn
The thatched roof of this listed 14th century barn was lost to fire in the 1960s. Its replacement corrugated iron roof kept the masonry in good condition until our clients planned to reinstate an oak frame thatched roof and use the building to create a beautiful venue for weddings, large gatherings and exhibitions. We worked closely with the design team to carefully survey the surviving masonry walls as the new frame had to faithfully follow the original masonry slots that housed the oak cruck blades. We followed the masonry evidence for the original roof pitch and agreed on the final design, meeting approval from the planners and conservation department. This exciting project allowed us to practice our craft at a very high level, replicating the mediaeval carpentry techniques that underpin most of our work.
