Kings Toll House
A very modern rear extension to a listed farm house in Kent succeeds in providing a light and airy open plan space for the kitchen and dining areas, with an integral external pergola providing shade in the summer and extending the living space out of doors. This project features a green roof with a glazed link between the two building structures. The exposed contemporary oak frames are glue laminated with ply incorporating steel flitch plate connections combined with structural ply sheathed softwood stud and roof panels to complete the superstructure. This system supports extensive fixed and openable glazing with folded zinc metal panels to the walls.
Due to the nature of the construction and the desired clean sawn finishes to the exposed oak elements, air dried oak was sourced in waney edged boards and re-sawn to give a fine finish and provide consistent dimensional stability within the structure. Great care was taken during the layup and carpentry work to protect the timber faces and every element was shrink wrapped prior to site installation. TFCo was responsible for the detailed design, specification, manufacturing and installation of the laminated oak frame, steel fabrication and sheathed panels.
